Why E-Collar Strap Doesn’t Have a D-Ring - And What’s the Alternative?
Most people expect every collar to have a D-ring. After all, that’s where you normally clip the lead when taking the dog out. Standard collars are designed this way - they sit a little looser and exist mainly as a convenient attachment point for walking.
An e-collar strap follows a different set of rules. It is made for one purpose only: holding the receiver unit snug and stable against the dog’s neck so the contact points maintain consistent, even pressure. That tight fit is essential for the collar to work properly. The moment you add a D-ring and clip a lead to it, this stability is lost.
When the dog pulls, the force travels through the D-ring and pulls the entire e-collar unit forward or sideways. Those contact points, which should rest gently and evenly, suddenly press harder and unevenly. What started as a precise training tool can quickly become a source of discomfort or pain. This is why we deliberately design our straps without D-rings.
So how to attach the lead if you’re using an e-collar?
You still need a reliable way to attach a lead. Here are the two practical solutions that protect both your dog and the performance of the e-collar:
1. Use a second collar for walking
Put a separate flat collar or martingale (with its own D-ring) on the dog purely for leash attachment. Keep the e-collar strap dedicated to maintaining proper contact. Many owners run both at the same time - one for control on the lead, the other for training. The two pieces of equipment no longer compete with each other.
2. Use a slip lead or figure-of-8 lead
These go over the dog’s head and give you control without attaching anything to the e-collar strap. A slip lead tightens gently when the dog pulls. A figure-8 lead adds a little more guidance by looping around the nose as well. Both options keep the receiver unit exactly where it needs to be while still giving you safe, effective leash handling.
The key is simple: don’t ask the e-collar strap to do a job it wasn’t designed for. Use the right tool for each task.
